Sound
Connolly Station Sonic Spaces

To leave the Dartline platform at Connolly station you walk underneath the train-tracks and up into and through the main Train Hall, into the entrance and finally exit the station via an escalator to the street below.
What became apparent in this sequence was the containment of sound in each space as the recorder moved through.
Dividing the recording into distinct scores, the abrupt change at their transition points almost mapped directly onto the spatial and visual transitions.
The resulting soundscape is intense and dramatic but lends a sense of place or character to the ‘rooms’ of the station.
The intention here is to create a kind of noisy, psychogeographic map that aspired to demonstrate a layered and multiple understanding of place. Here, I’ve documented the sounds and have begun to investigate the media required to present a soundscape for discussion.
Because the boundaries of the sonic and the visual are rarely identical, I tried to overlap the pattern of a moving traveller with the sounds heard and spaces experienced to convey the relation between the two.
